Hebrews 9:11-28

This passage of scripture is a good reminder for this week as we think of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 9:11-28 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth. Mummy Dash's Gumbo

I'm not sure where this traditional Southern recipe came from. It was contributed to The Home Maker's Corner years back. It may have been something my dad found somewhere, or it could have come from a reader. You will note that some of the ingredients don't have amounts. You will have to use your own judgement on that. :-)  It's adventure cooking. ;-)

Mummy Dash's Gumbo

Mummy Dash celebrated her
100th birthday on August 23rd,1995.

I was raised on gumbo; in my house we also called it Okra Soup. Gumbo has been described as the "poor man's meal," or a "Saturday dish," prepared when you emptied your refrigerator at the end of the week. As far as I'm concerned, Gumbo is a luxury. It takes all day to prepare (to do it right) and the fresh Okra required to make it can be difficult to locate and expensive. As with many gourmets, Mummy Dash doesn't use precise measurements. For best results, rely on your own sense of taste.

2 lbs. of fresh short-stemmed Okra
3 medium Ham Hocks (or use smoked turkey)
Chicken
Beef
Shrimp
Tomato Sauce
Whole stewed tomatoes
2 medium onions
Fresh cut corn (or baby ears)
1/2 cup (cooked) lima beans
1 sliced green pepper
Sweet red peppers
Dash of sugar
2-3 cloves of garlic(diced)
Celery (instead of salt)
Parsley
Crushed Tomatoes

Cook ham hocks or smoked turkey with water in a very deep pot. Cook on low flame, keep adding water. Cook until the meat is falling off the bone (the bone sweetens the soup).

While the meat is still cooking, cut the tips and heads off the okra. Finely slice the okra: don't dice it! Chop your onions, pepper, garlic, celery and parsley.
Add the chicken and the beef to the pot when the meat is almost off the bone. Add tomatoes, onions, green and red peppers, celery and garlic. Continue to cook slowly.

When it's almost ready, add cut corn and crushed tomatoes. Add okra and shrimp in the last ten minutes of cooking. If the shrimp cook too long they will be tough.


 This soup should be eaten with white rice.

Editor: I recommend putting a scoop of cooked white rice in the bottom of each bowl before adding the gumbo on top.

A preacher in Hyde Park had just finished what he had to say when a man stepped from the crowd and addressed the company in this strain:

"Ladies and gentlemen, you have been listening to this chap talking about God, Heaven, and Jesus Christ. He has had a lot to say about sin and death, the devil and hell. I hope you won't believe a word of it. I don't. I refuse to believe in what I cannot see."

And in this manner he went on for some time ridiculing faith in anything that could not be seen.

As he finished, another man elbowed his way forward and on the this wise he, too, addressed the company:

"Friends, I hear that not far from here runs a river. I don't believe it. Many declare the grass hereabouts is a beautiful green. I don't believe it. And some also say that by these walks are pretty shrubs which yearly blossom forth to please the eye of man and make pleasant the surroundings. Again, let me declare, I don't believe it! By all this, however, I am sure that most of you standing here will decided that I am talking like a fool. Really, I am serious...

A Documentary on the Lives of Adoniram and Ann Judson - Missionaries to Burma In the 1800s

 I ran across this documentary on YouTube yesterday and wanted to share it here. This is the story of Adoniram and Ann Judson who took the gospel to Burma in the 1800s. It is inspiring and moving to think about how people like this suffered for the privilege to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ in heathen countries. God's grace was sufficient for them, and it is for us as well.

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Romans 10:13-15 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! 

This documentary is well done, but I have to put a disclaimer on the source. Vision Video does sell/provide a wide variety of movies and films, so if you look them up please use discernment. Also, I do not know the history or character of the people interviewed for this film.

A Short Thought On Grieving and God's Comfort

 

Here is something I shared on my Facebook page and thought I'd post it here as well.

Today marks one year since my dear mom went to be with the Lord. It feels like it shouldn't be that long yet, but in other ways it feels longer. She had started to leave by bits and pieces long before that because of the dementia that was stealing her away from us.

Grief is a strange, unpleasant thing that we struggle to deal with. Sometimes people say it is a normal part of life. I don't believe it is, and I think that is what makes it so hard for us to deal with it. God didn't intend for us to die and to deal with death. Mankind was not originally created to die. Did you ever think about that? It is not a natural part of life for us. It is unavoidable and predictable, but it hurts so much because it is part of the curse of sin, not one of the things we were created to deal with.

Adam and Eve sinned in eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, but also failed to eat of the tree of life. I have wondered about that sometimes. Then God shut them out of the Garden of Eden so that they wouldn't eat of it and live forever in their sinful state (Gen. 3:22). He had a plan to give us eternal life, but the price had to be paid to make that possible.

1 Corinthians 15:26 says, "The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death." People sometimes talk like it's a blessing or something to look forward to even. I understand why Christians say that because of the hope of heaven and rest, but I don't believe it is entirely biblical. Death is an enemy. The process of giving us the victory over it and the hope of the resurrection was complicated and extremely costly to Jesus Christ. And, that enemy is not destroyed yet. We still face it over and over, both in our own experience and just by living in this death filled world.

2 Corinthians 1:3-5 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.

Here is something to think about - We cannot learn to give others God's comfort unless we have been in need of it ourselves. So feeling the grief and letting God comfort us in it is part of His will for us now, because He intends for us to pass it on to other hurting people.

Hebrews 4:15-16 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
