A Reminder for this Time of Year

I posted this article about a year ago.  It deals with Halloween, the Twilight series, Harry Potter, The Hunger Games and more.  If you have not read it, I encourage you to do so.

If you still think Halloween is cute and “just for fun”, please open your eyes to what is going on in our culture, please read this and please consider what you are doing before the Lord.  We are called to be separated unto the Lord.  Being friends with the world and doing what they do will not make you a better testimony.  James 4:4  …know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God?…  It will actually please the world to have you join their works of darkness because if you approve their evil they feel justified in continuing in it.  John 3:19-20  And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.  No excuse you can come up with justifies observing a celebration that is “wholly given to idolatry” (Acts 17:6) – in this case, witchcraft, paganism and the occult!

Note: By “observing” I mean participating in the traditions and customs specific to this “holiday”.  Handing out Gospel tracts to those who come to the door is up for debate.  Some Christians don’t wish to participate in any way, which I understand and my family has done.  To others it seems useful for spreading the Gospel message, and my family has done this at times as well.

In Titus 2:10-12 we’re told regarding servants’ behavior that their lives should adorn the doctrine of God. …that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,  Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;  All believers are (or should be) servants of God.  Obviously, it is right that all our lives should adorn sound doctrine as the next verses indicate.  How does the celebration of a Satanic “holiday” adorn the doctrine of God?

2 Corinthians 6:14 and 17  Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?…Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,

Ephesians 5:11-17  And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.  Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.  See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

Hard Questions: What would the Ephesian Believers Think of Halloween, Twilight and Harry Potter in Christian Homes?

  1. Halloween was never a big thing here in Australia (I hardly even knew about it growing up) but in recent years retail has been strongly encouraging it (to make money) and more and more people are having Halloween parties and the like. It is so disappointing that we copy America on this one.

    1. We noticed when we were over there that Halloween is was much less in evidence than it is in the States this time of year. I agree - it's too bad that Aussies are learning American ways on that.

I hate all the hideous things in evidence this time of year here, although I think it's a little better than it was a few years back. For awhile I didn't even like to go into any stores during October because of all the horrible "decorations" and advertising. It has seemed to improve slightly. Perhaps parents with small children were complaining, or maybe it's worse in some parts of this country than in others.

      Thanks for commenting.

    2. I read a number of Christian blogs and I am fascinated by the number who "decorate" their homes for Fall. We just don't do that and find it all very strange. A number of blogs have had photos of pumpkins in all the house and decorations on their mantelpieces. I wouldn't even think of decorating for spring right now!!

  2. I totally agree with you about Halloween. People, even many of my Christian friends, think it's no big deal. I've heard the same reasons/excuses you've heard about their family participating in the "holiday" activities. Once I researched the origins of Halloween, I stopped participating. As a Christian, I saw that as being hypocritical. It does not honor The Lord in the least, even though my catholic friends may attend All Souls' Day services the next day. To me, if someone couldn't invite our Lord to participate, we shouldn't be doing it ourselves. (I doubt anyone would feel comfortable asking Him to go trick or treating with them, if they were completely honest with themselves.) My husband and I don't give out candy or answer our door, and haven't in years. From what I've seen on the internet, the costumes and makeup have gotten particularly more disgusting and evil looking this year. It's just disturbing to me, but hey, "it's no big deal", right?

    1. Thanks for your comment and for stopping by. When I see the billboards for the "Houses of Horror", and knowing the obsession right now with vampires, zombies, etc. I am really amazed at Christians thinking it's "just fun" to participate. I don't want to see many of the things that are being put out there, let alone choosing to allow children to see them. There are things that scared me in my childhood that I still have to deal with as an adult, I *know* it affects the kids one way or another (whether it's to cause fear or to harden them against recognizing evil).

Your point is good about not being able to invite the Lord to participate. But, in reality, He is there anyway because He has promised to be with us always! And, in context of what I said above, He warned us, Luke 17:2 It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones. How can the Lord be pleased with parents who allow or force their children to be exposed to the kind of things they will see on such a night. The stuff that can't be avoided is bad enough. I remember reading how one family's three year old opened the door on Halloween night before anyone else could get there, saw the "monsters" and died of a heart attack on the spot. The fear is real!
