  1. Hi.....my husband Jim Greenwalt entered the war in Indiana at age sixteen. He dropped out of High school to go in. He was stationed in the Philipines and Japan. He flew as a gunner and was not injured. He also loved to cook so was very puopular with all the men and higher ups as well as he would trade things for good food and cook it for everyone. When he got out he went home and was able to graduate with his sister who was two years younger than he was. He had so many stories to tell.....he never got over the war. My dad too was in the war...as a medica staff Sarge...and his job was to identify the fallen ..with teeth records...he was so different when he came home...mom said. I was only three and had never seen him....So thank you men who fought for us...for our right to live freely. Thank you dear for posting this..blessings love merri

    1. My grandfather was in Hawaii (briefly) and the Gilbert Islands during WWII. He was a medic.

  2. My paternal grandfather was in WWII, but he didn't fight. He worked in telecommunications, putting up telegraph lines across Papua New Guinea so the soldiers etc could communicate. Conditions were very, very tough over there and he got very sick, but survived (he died when I was 8 years old).

    1. I changed the title to those "who served" because I liked the point that your grandfather didn't fight. Ours didn't either. He went in as a "non-combatant." As I mentioned in the comment above, he was in the Gilbert Islands (now Kiribati) as a medic. It was a tough job. He saw a lot of what they called "shell shock." I don't remember if he assisted at surgeries at all. There was a lot that he never told us.
