Josh Duggar In the Shadow of the Past

The recent news story about Josh Duggar’s past sexual sins has been a hot topic lately.  I have actually been doing research on the Duggars for quite some time and had some things already written or partially written with a view to dealing with their fame and fortune and public image.  This situation has forced me to go ahead, but in a way that I didn’t anticipate and with a topic that is very unsavory.  After doing research on this latest development in the Duggar drama, I’ve written an article at my web page, The Home Maker’s Corner.

---------------------------

Josh Duggar In the Shadow of the Past

1 Peter 1:24-25
For all flesh
is
as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

Poor Josh.  Bad Josh.  Hypocritical Josh. Victim Josh.  Mis-understood Josh.  Wicked Josh.  Good Josh.

"What about the victims?  Josh is getting too much attention."  "The victims shouldn't be getting attention, they shouldn't be exposed."  "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."  "Forgive and forget."

It seems like there are as many opinions on Josh Duggar's past sin as there are people.  At the risk of falling into that unending pool of opinion, I'm going to write something on the subject myself.  First, though, I will frankly say that I don't really know what to think about some aspects of this case.  For one thing, we don't have enough information to really know what was going on, and since the Duggars are not truly about public reality, we more than likely never will.  We don't really know what goes on inside the Duggar world and church fellowship, we only know the image that they present for public viewing.  Consequetly it's hard to make any solid conclusions.  However, some things come to mind.

Sew Happy Friday- Fat Eighth Frenzy Quilt Tutorial from the Fat Quarter Shop

Here’s a tutorial for a quick and easy quilt made from fat eighths.  These are half the size of fat quarters, so what you could do is get fat quarters and cut them in half lengthwise, saving the other fat eighths for another project, or make two quilts at once.

Here is the bonus video that gives an idea for using up the leftover triangles.  However, here’s a good tip to save time on this: When you make the diagonal line across the ends of the fat eighths for the “Fat Eighth Frenzy” quilt, draw a second line half an inch away on the small side where the triangles will be trimmed off.  After you sew the line for the fat eight “diamond” piece, whip it around the sew on the second line.  Now when you cut between these two lines you will have your unit for the “Fat Eighth Frenzy” AND a half-square triangle block all done both with a quarter inch seam allowance.  You will still probably need to trim the triangle blocks to make sure they are all the same size. This will save time and save you the trouble of sewing on the bias of the triangles.

And remember – you can do all kinds of things with half-square triangles.  Their idea is fine, but let your creativity flow. :-)

Reader’s Comments – Why Do Americans Spring Clean?

About a year ago, the following comment was made on the post “Laying Aside Weights – Some Thoughts On Dealing with Things”.

Jo from Finding Joy In the Everyday wrote:  “Clara and I were talking on Facebook about spring cleaning, we don't do it in Australia like Americans do. We wondered why , Clara thought it might be the change in weather from very cold to warmer. Our temperature is not quite as extreme. I suppose we clean our homes all year round so there is no need for special time set aside for a more in depth clean. It's an interesting difference…”

From what I understand and have read, spring cleaning had a lot to do with the seasons.  These are just some observations I could think of in relation to that.  I’m by no means an expert on this subject! :-)

Painting by Henry Spernon Tozer

1. Smoke, ashes and soot.

During the dark, cold months of winter when the houses were being heated with wood and lighted for more hours of the day with candles and kerosene (coal oil), there was a build up of ashes, soot and smut.  My own family has heated with wood in a heavy winter climate and I remember how much more dust there was during the winter due to that.  Spring would have been a good time for a good clean up of some of these problems – the ones that perhaps were hard to deal with in cold weather.

2. Dirt, mud and other stuff.

In the winter in colder climates a lot of junk can get tracked into the house.  As wood (and at one time coal) is carried in a certain amount of extra dirt and debris will come too.  Depending on where the wood was gathered it can be quite dirty or quite clean.  Also, there are thaws which can produce mud in the middle of winter, and spring itself can be very muddy in some places.

Added to that, in the past more people had root cellars and stored large quantities of root vegetables, along with apples, cabbage and other things.  At the end of winter when some of these foods were mostly or all eaten, or when the remainder were starting to spoil, there would have been a huge cleaning job to get those storage areas cleaned thoroughly.  I’ve had a little experience with that as my family also has stored vegetables and apples and we had to deal with the clean up on a small scale.

3. No opportunity to clean some things.

Also, back in the old days people had area rugs and throw rugs on their floors.  These rugs were dragged outside to be beaten and cleaned from time to time.  After a long span of winter weather when it would have been impractical, spring was the obvious time to do this.

Heavy bedding might also be saved for a good washing in spring.  Heavy quilts, blankets and such like would not have been easy to wash with limited space and drying arrangements that were common in winter in average houses.  Also, since in many households there was a limited supply of these items and they were needed every night in winter, it wouldn’t have been a good idea to wash them in a situation where they couldn’t be dry by nightfall.  Airing might be possible, but washing would be uncertain at best.

4. Once-a-year jobs.

Some jobs needed to be done once a year, or every other year perhaps.  Things like sanding and oiling the floors (and possibly walls), whitewashing, and other things.  It probably only made sense to do them when other big house cleaning jobs were being done.  Why remove the rugs more than was necessary?

Conclusion

I’m sure that a number or all of these practices relating to spring cleaning came with various people from “the old country”.  Many of them came from cold climates to cold climates, so it made sense to keep on doing those things.  Added to that, the Puritan influence was heavy in New England and they were quite obsessed with cleanliness/tidiness as an evidence of piety.  (Another whole topic evolves from that.)

I can see how spring cleaning would not be necessary in Australia’s milder and hot climates.  I couldn’t honesty tell you if spring cleaning was practiced by the early settlers of our southwest.  They may have dropped it as well where it wasn’t necessary.

There are many people who no longer practice spring cleaning.  Our modern cleaning abilities, more comfortable homes, cleaner methods of heating (in some cases), cleaner lighting, washing machines and dryers, etc. have made it possible to do heavier cleaning projects throughout the year.  Consequently, some of us choose to do this rather than making a heavy, labor-intensive project of it once a year.  Some of us are very random about it.  (Not mentioning my anyone’s name.)  :-)

A friend of a friend was complimented once on how tidy and she kept her house.  Her reply was, “Just don’t move anything.”  ;-)

Red Noodle Beans and An Idea that Failed

Last year my dad grew these beautiful Chinese red noodle beans (Baker Creek Seeds).  They were really beautiful to look at, and when cooked from fresh they were quite good – definitely good enough to grow again.  The down side was that they did not can or freeze well.  Perhaps we didn’t know the right trick, but they became very soft and mushy when we tried to process them for longer term storage.  Of course, canning beans required pressure cooking, which was more than these could stand up to.  The take away for us was that they are good for producing a large amount of summer food, but not so great for long term storage.

The flowers on them were pretty and looked like a typical bean blossom, only these grew on vines so they were more reminiscent of sweet peas.

I had cooked them before, I think, and knew that the gorgeous red would fade some when they were cooked, but one day I got the idea that since they were “noodle beans”, maybe I should just cook them whole like noodles.  Bad idea.  This is what they looked like on the plate:

Yeah.  Any gardener will know what those look like – earth worms.  Yuck!  :-)

Another reminder that presentation IS an important part of good food. :-)

From Mom’s Collection - Home – A Poem

This poem presents a somewhat idealized picture of home, but I really like it.  It is something that we should be striving for in Christ Jesus.  My mom copied this out onto a sheet of lined paper and decorated it with a bird sticker (the vintage lickable kind).  I think she liked it too. :-)

Mark 5:19  Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.

Home

Home is the place where hearts are one,
Where love and kindness reign;
A place of rest when day is done
From life’s corroding strain.

A shelter in the time of storm,
However low or great;
A cheering fire by which to warm,
Though coming soon or late.

The heart of father kind and true,
Whose wise, protecting care,
Will help and guide in all we do
And shield from every snare.

The love of mother, in whose heart
The fruits of kindness grow;
Always ready to bear her part,
And point the way to go.

Where all its inmates live to serve,
To comfort, cheer and bless;
And all display and help preserve
The air of peacefulness.

A home that Christ Himself may share
And make it His abode;
Where weary ones forget their care,
And leave their heavy load.

It matters not how rich or poor,
The home whose law is love
Reflects from Heaven’s open door
The Better Home above.

-- Mary V. Harris

I love the thought that our homes can be a reflection of our heavenly home.  I wonder how we would change our homes if we applied this more to the choices we make and the things we do.

Matthew 6:10  Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Evening Song – Jesus Hold My Hand & I’d Rather Have Jesus

Psalms 139:10  Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

Matthew 6:19-21  Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Berry Fun Friday- A Can of Berries Craft Project

Photo from The Enchanting Rose

Stephanie at The Enchanting Rose posted this cute strawberry project in March.  Her instructions on how to make the strawberries are quite simple.  You don’t have to have the exact supplies she used to make your own can.  “Shop your own stuff” to come up with something that will look nice for your décor – fabric scraps, trims, etc.  Also, search online for a pretty picture to print for the front of the can.

Four Years Ago– Homemade Chocolate Pudding

Four years ago this month I posted this recipe for homemade chocolate pudding.  I hope you enjoy the “re-run”.  Chocolate pudding is something we should re-run often. haha :-)

Homemade Chocolate Pudding

“Yes, really!  Pudding without a mix.  Boxed pudding will never taste the same! :-)  And, it’s so easy.  The only really “hard” part is stirring it till it’s ready.”

Double Sew Happy Friday- Making Greeting Cards with Fabric Scraps

I pre-scheduled the previous post today and then remembered this morning that I’d wanted to put up something that you all could use for Mother’s Day.  In working on blog posts today I found these two tutorials for using fabric scraps to make greeting cards.  I thought I’d have a “double feature” today and just go ahead and post these as well.  There’s still time to make a few cards for some special ladies you want to remember on Mother’s Day. :-)

These cards are great for just about any occasion, though, so be creative!

The first tutorial takes larger scraps, but it’s fast and easy and you could add other decorations as you wish – lace, rick rack, buttons, bias tape, etc.  If you don’t have spray adhesive try a glue stick.

This second tutorial is supposed to be Valentine cards, but they can easily be used for any holiday or event.  It’s a great way to use up scraps from an iron-on project.  If you don’t have scraps, you will need something like Wonder Under or Pellon that has iron-on glue on both sides.

Sew Happy Friday– A Clever Way to Make Flying Geese Units

This method is what I would consider slightly complicated.  By that I mean, while it’s a clever way to save time, it may take you a few times watching or following along closely as you work to get this one down.  But, once you’ve learned it, it looks so much quicker or easier than working with little triangles.  Plus she give us the ratios for figuring out what we need to cut, which is a big help for us mathematically deficient sewists.  (Yes, you can be low functioning in math and still enjoy sewing!) :-)

Monthly Challenge - May

(Click on the graphic to get a copy to save to your computer for your own use.)

If you don’t know what the challenges are about, please read the first one. :-)

This month quite a few people around the world will be observing Mother’s Day so it seemed like a good idea to include that somehow in the challenge – but not in the way you might expect since these challenges are intended to push us outside our usual boxes. :-)

The challenges –

---------------------------

Finish a project you have been working on.

And/Or

Send an encouraging card/note to or do something nice for a lady who has no children or who recently lost her mother or a child.

---------------------------

Finishing an unfinished project is usually a good thing to push towards.  I know I have plenty of “scope for the imagination” on that one!  I just need to choose which one (or ones) I’m going to address.  I’m not putting any specs on this.  It could be something you started yesterday or 10 years ago.  It can be something fun or something you really didn’t want to do.  Just get it done if at all possible! :-)

What we do for the lady who has no children or lost her mother/child is meant to be something cheerful and/or comforting.  A sympathy card may be appropriate in some cases where a mother or child died, but don’t send words of sympathy to the childless lady unless you know her very well and know that is what she needs.  (And don’t forget the single childless ladies.)  (For further reading on childless ladies: A Word to “The Mother Club” On Behalf of the Hurting Ones Outside.)

Please don’t write about all your problems or how cute your own kids are or how great your mother is.  Try to be cheerful.  Try to show compassion without emphasizing what she doesn’t have.  This is especially important this month, even though the goal is not necessarily to send something before Mother’s Day.  Use scripture, a hymn, an uplifting poem or a devotional thought if you can’t think of what to write.  You could print something from the internet that was a blessing to you.  Or, if she lives near by, you could take her some flowers from your garden, some homemade treat or some fruit.  Invite her over for tea or take her out for coffee. :-)  She may be a lady you know would appreciate just spending time with your children and you, so share your kids.  But, be sure to pray about it.  You know the Lord is interested in us doing these things, right?  If we ask for His help, He will direct us.  He knows exactly what she needs and He is always ready to help us obey His word.

Romans 12:10  Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;

===========================

Update on the April Challenge.

My husband and I didn’t manage to do any exploring till last Saturday, which obviously was May 2nd.  Oh well, it was still fun.  We started by going down Blessing Ranch Rd., which isn’t too far from where we live.  Isn’t that a neat name?  I wonder what Blessing Ranch was like back in the day.  Was it really a blessing to the people who named it?  Or was that their last name?  Maybe I can learn something through Google.  Anyway, we wandered on some back roads and learned a little more about our “neck of the woods”. :-)  I still hope to visit a shop, café, or somewhere that we’ve never been in before.  More later on that if we do.

Word of the Month- Attributes of God: Forgiveness

I have made a page for this series over at The Home Maker’s Corner so that links to all the attributes we cover can be found in one place.

Attribute n. - a quality or feature regarded as a characteristic or inherent part of someone or something.

Psalms 130:4  But there is forgiveness with thee, that
thou mayest be feared.

One of the most wonderful things about the God of the Bible, the one true God, is that He offers us forgiveness.  I think this is something that we often fail to appreciate at its full value.  Jesus did make it clear that some people understand the value more than others, but it appears to me that this is because some people understand the reality of their own sinfulness more than others.

Luke 7:47  Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.

Why is a God who forgives so important and one to be feared?  I have written before somewhat on this subject.  Please read this past post for the importance of having A God Who Forgives.

The basic idea in fearing a God who forgives is that we are people who need forgiveness, and most or all of the gods of other religions and the humanized “God” of many “christian” groups do not offer the kind of forgiveness that the Bible says God Almighty offers us. Why would we want to fear a god who can’t forgives us our sins – ALL our sins?  We don’t need to fear God as some ogre who will wreck havoc upon us based on His own whimsical ideals without justice and holiness.  We fear Him in awe and holiness because He is holy and just, and yet He desires to forgive us if we’ll come to Him in humility and repentance through Jesus Christ.

Acts 13:38  Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:

Ephesians 1:7  In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

1 John 2:12  I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.

Acts 26:18  To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

Romans 4:3-8  For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

You see, forgiveness is not something we can earn by works, otherwise it is no longer grace and God owes it to us.  Forgiveness comes through the righteousness that is imputed (To charge; to attribute; to set to the account of… Source) to us through faith in Jesus Christ.

It is a tremendous blessing to have our sins forgiven by the the Lord – to know that our sins are forgiven!  We’ve already discussed that God is eternal and that any offence against Him is an eternal offence.  This is one reason that we need the eternal forgiveness that only He can give us.  God has always been a God who forgives (many O.T. references) but He made the final atonement possible through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 10:10  By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

I read something recently where a couple had talked to a lady who appeared to believe that Jesus was a great comforter, but she didn’t see any need in Him as a Savior.  She was not interested in having her sins forgiven because she seemed to like them just fine.  She just wanted comfort for the trials of life.  What good is a comforter to sinners without forgiveness of sin?  We can’t be comforted while we remain unforgiven because sin and guilt and shame are all tied up together and none of those will allow us to experience true comfort without true forgiveness.

1 John 1:8-9  If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

There is great comfort in knowing that we are forgiven by God and cleansed from all our unrighteousness.

One interesting thing a brother pointed out once in a sermon we heard was that God knows not only our past sins, but all the sins we are going to commit.  We need to trust Him to forgive us from all of our sins.  Some might stumble over this and think that because God knows and will forgive our future sins that gives us license to sin.  It does not.  We do not sin that grace may abound (Rom. 6:1-2), nor do we sin because we know God will forgive us later.  When we fear Him because He can forgive sins, we will desire not to sin against Him further.

Some people seem to almost think that when we’re born again all of our past sins are forgiven and taken care of, but somehow we’re responsible for all the future ones.  In other words, once we’re saved we’re responsible to keep ourselves saved by not sinning any more, or perhaps doing some kind of penance for sins we commit.  This is impossible.  If Christ died for our sins, either He died for them all, or we never needed a Savior in the first place and could have saved ourselves.  If we can take care of some of our sins, we could have taken care of all of them.  No, we can’t take care of any of them.  All of our sins were future when He died so how can we mark a time at which point we are now responsible.  He promised to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  For us today every bit of that was future when He said that.  Long before we were even born He knew every sin we would commit before we were saved AND after we were saved, and He is faithful and just to forgive us because He promised He would be.

Some years ago Josh Harris published a story he wrote about going into a room where there was a huge filing system with a card for every sin he had ever committed.  He opened these and was shamed and horrified to find all these things recorded is such detail.  As he looked, he was astonished as he began to notice that Jesus Christ’s name was being substituted for his name on all of the cards.  In other words, Jesus was taking responsibility for what he, Josh Harris, had done.  This is a poor, emaciated view of what God has really done for us in the way of forgiveness.  Jesus doesn’t sign His name to our account, He wiped out the account!  There is no record in His sight!

We’re told in 2 Corinthians 5:21,  For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.  He became our sin, He didn’t just write His name to the charge.  He paid the price in full and closed the account and destroyed the record, so to speak!  He made us the righteousness of God!  That completely blots out any accusation of sin because God is completely righteous.  But, of course, we can only have this righteousness in Him!

Colossians 2:13-14  And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

He blotted out the ordinances that we had broken – the just accusations of all the ways that we had broken the laws of God.  He nailed them to His cross and He does not remember them.

Hebrews 8:12  For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

Did you ever stop to think about how limiting our human memories are - not in the sense that we forget, but in the sense that we remember?  Oh, that’s a whole other story, isn’t it?  God can offer us His God-like forgiveness because He can make Himself forget.  He can choose not to remember.  That is a forgiveness beyond our human comprehension, and I think that is one reason why we tend to not believe the enormity of it.  If we can remember our sins, surely God must.  But, He chooses not to!

I remember how conscience-stricken I was when a heard a brother talk about how it is a sin to repeatedly confess a sin over and over to God (a specific sin that we committed at a specific time).  His thought was that the Lord has said He does not remember it, so we are reminding Him by bringing it up over and over again.  This man saw that as sin in reminding God of something that He said He had forgiven and forgotten.  I really struggled with this and it was at that point that I often prayed when confessing sin to the Lord that He would help me to believe that I’m forgiven.

Psalms 103:12  As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

As it has been pointed out many times, the east and the west never meet.  If you go east, you will continue going east indefinitely.  And so also with going west.  This is the distance between us and our transgressions.

If you still have struggles and doubts about being forgiven, you may be encouraged by reading this article I wrote over at The Home Maker’s Corner: Forgiven.

Conclusion

God is not forgiving “all by Himself” as He is “good all by Himself”.  Forgiveness, by the very definition of what it is, requires another party – the offender.  A God who is holy, just, pure, and undefiled but has provided a way to forgive those who have sinned against Him – ah, that is an awe-inspiring God, that is a God to be feared and worshipped with reverence.  Every one of us can stand and say, “Guilty as charged” to our own sins before God, but through faith in Jesus Christ and the astounding work He accomplished by dying on the cross for us, we can also say, “Forgiven”.  This is too big for me to explain.  I cannot get my little brain around it.  I have to take it by faith.

However, this forgiveness of God’s does press us for further action.

Ephesians 4:32  And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

The God-like forgiveness that we have received through Jesus Christ should inspire us to show that same forgiveness to our fellow believers.

As we go through this month, let’s try to keep in mind

1. the greatness of the forgiveness that an Almighty God can offer us,
2. our great need for forgiveness, and
3. how we can extend that forgiveness to others – either as fellow believers, or by pointing unbelievers to the source of true forgiveness.

Psalms 103:2-3  Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities…

Sew Happy Friday- How to Make Hair Scrunchies and A Towel Hair Wrap

Operation Summer Hair Rescue Part 1 - How To Make Scrunchies

Here’s a tutorial from Ikatbag.com for making hair scrunchies.  Yes, some of us wear hair scrunchies still.  Some of us never quit!  Mine are a very essential part of my routine and/or accessories every day.  [Photo property of LiEr at Ikatbag.com)  This method is better than the method I used in the past.  I think it looks a bit more finished.

Towel Wrap for Your Hair – at SkipToMyLou.org

My sister-in-law gave me one these that she had bought at some point and didn’t use any more.  It worked well enough for me, and I liked it, but I don’t keep my hair up in a towel for very long after a shower, and so I concluded that it wasn’t worth having the extra item in our bathroom (not much storage).  However, they are useful items, and in case any of my readers would like to make one, here is tutorial.  They are simple to make, and you could easily up-cycle a bath or beach towel that is getting a little frayed around the edges into one of these.
