Mother’s Question

I'm reposting this from May 2013 as it is a particularly good reminder.

Mother's Question

I think as the night draws nigh
Of an old house on the hill,
Of a yard all wide and blossom-starred
Where the children played at will.
And when the night at last came down,
Hushing the merry din,
Mother would look around and ask,
"Are all the children in?"

'Tis many and many a year since then.
And the old house on the hill
No longer echoes to childish feet,
And the yard is still, so still.
But I see it all, as the shadows creep,
And though many the years have been
Since then, I can hear mother ask,
"Are all the children in?"

I wonder if when the shadows fall
On the last short, earthly day,
When we say good-bye to the world outside,
All tired with our childish play.
When we step over to Jesus' Land
Where mother so long has been,
Will we hear her ask, just as of old,
"Are all the children in?"

By One of the Children
[Altered]

3 John 1:4 I have no greater joy than to
hear that my children walk in truth.

What about your mother's children?
Will they all be "in" when the trumpet of
the Lord shall sound and time shall be no more?

  1. What a beautiful post...the photo, poem and scripture are just perfect. There were 8 of us kids and I was the baby. I remember playing outside on summer nights and my mom's thing was to leave the porch light on for us. As we grew and started dating and staying out a little later, Mom never failed to leave the light on for us. Love thinking back to those days :)

    1. Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing your memory with us. :-)
The lady at the door in that photo is actually my own grandmother. They were missionaries in East Africa.

  4. Oh, my! This is SO touching! It reminds me SO strongly of my dear, precious mother. Oh, I miss her. It has now been 5 years since Jesus called her home. Mother's day is always hard, but I know, by God's grace, one day we will meet her again. I hope all of her children will be in...God help us all.

    1. Cheryl, I'm glad it was a blessing to you! There are so many reason why Mother's Day is hard for different ones of us, isn't there? ((hugs)) What a blessing it is to know we will see our loved ones in the Lord someday again in heaven!
